Caberfae Peaks: Smiling is Easy from top to bottom
Novices
can experience the thrill of skiing the resort's tallest mountain as Caberfae Peaks celebrates its 75th
year.
North Peak soars above the surrounding Manistee National Forest presenting breathtaking vistas from its summit.
It's a thrill every level of skier can experience because at Caberfae Peaks even novices can cruise from the very
top of the resort's highest mountain all the way to the bottom, a unique treat in Michigan skiing.
The fun begins by hopping on the North Peak quad chair. During the ride to the top you can look out over the
forest, watch skiers glide down runs under the chair, and check out the action on neighboring South Peak. The
highlight of your arrival atop North Peak is a stunning 360-degree panorama. Families often pause for photos
because the scenery here is picture perfect.
Most resorts only cater to experts on their highest mountains, but one of Caberfae's signature runs off the top is
beginner and family friendly. You start on Smiling Irishmen, which is a green route around the shoulder of North
Peak. The run was widened this year and is now triple its original width, so there's plenty of room for sweeping
turns.
Eventually, you transition from Smiling Irishmen into another green trail, Easy Street. This winds through the
lower reaches of North Peak and is the most popular novice run at the resort. It's also a spot where you can choose
from several nifty options to the bottom. The first offshoot, Monty's, promises a tinge of adventure for most
novices as it's a short stretch of intermediate pitch falling into the lower Canyon trail. Next in line are a pair
of sweet green twisters through the trees, Gum Drop and Candy Cane. Finally, Easy Street empties into Lower Easy
Street, traditionally known as Instructors by the locals. A quick sashay along Lower Easy Street or Lower Candy
Cane leads back to the base of the North Peak Quad where the entire family can rendezvous for a ride back to the
top.
All together, from the summit of North Peak to the base, skiers travel three-quarters of a mile, a trip so long
that regular Caberfae Peaks skiers have tabbed it “the Caberfae Downhill.” On a sun-splashed day, it's one of the
most smile inducing novice ski routes in all of Michigan.
